David Hemingson made one of the most remarkable feature film debuts in recent memory as the screenwriter and producer of Focus Features’ The Holdovers, earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
Jeff Rake is the creator and showrunner of the global phenomenon Manifest, a character-driven series that ran for four seasons and became one of Netflix’s most-watched shows worldwide.
In this moderated fireside chat, Hemingson and Rake will explore their creative paths and the craft of building character-driven stories with lasting impact.
A reception will follow, offering alumni the opportunity to connect and continue the conversation.

David Hemingson is a veteran television writer and producer whose feature film debut as the screenwriter and producer of The Holdovers received five Academy Award nominations, with Hemingson also winning Best Original Screenplay honors from the National Board of Review and the WGA. A Hollywood mainstay for nearly three decades, his television credits include creating and executive producing Kitchen Confidential, as well as writing and producing Whiskey Cavalier, Just Shoot Me, How I Met Your Mother, Black-ish, American Dad, Family Guy, and Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. Hemingson will be an adjunct professor at Bennington College in Vermont for the inaugural class of their Masters in Screenwriting program.
Jeff Rake recently served as creator, executive producer, writer, and showrunner for NBC/Netflix’s Manifest. He previously developed and executive produced The Mysteries of Laura, which aired for multiple seasons on NBC and in more than one hundred countries. His past credits include consulting producer on The CW’s Beauty and the Beast, TNT’s Franklin & Bash and Hawthorne, and Fox’s Bones. Rake also executive produced ABC’s Cashmere Mafia and Boston Legal, NBC’s Miss Match, and Fox’s The $treet. On the feature side, he has written screenplays for MGM and Disney. He released his debut novel, Detour, in January.
